"Forres, in the 1830s, had limited facilities for printing and most of what was required was produced either in Elgin, Inverness, or Aberdeen. The only individual in the town who had any claim to be called a printer was Alexander Milne of Milne’s Wynd, (1779/80, Urquhart - 1849, Forres), who kept a bookseller’s shop. Milne came to Forres about 1798 as master of the Grammar School but later gave up that position to commence business as bookseller. Reputedly an eccentric genius, his knowledge of books was extensive. He could brew, bake, distil, bind, print and sell books. His stock of printing material, though, consisted only of an old Stanhope press, a few typefaces of no particular size or shape, and old-fashioned leather printing balls.
