Using the Wiki software

Please read the MediaWiki FAQ before editing any pages - it explains a lot of the basic concepts of the wiki software, including how to make new pages, create links, and edit your own user page. The dictionary uses the same wiki software (MediaWiki) as that used by Wikipedia, so if you have edited Wikipedia pages before, you will find it's quite familiar.

Getting Started with Editing

When adding translations for words, please follow these simple guidelines:

• All translations should be added to the Translations subsection of the page. If there are different languages or parts of speech for the same word, there should be separate translation sections for each.

• Any words added to the lists of translations for a word should added using the translation template, by typing in the following code:

  {{t|en|translation to be added}}.

  There are three parts to the template:

1. The "t" code that tells the wiki that this is a translation (as opposed to a separate term page)
2. The two letter language code, which tells the wiki what language the term is being translated into. A list of language codes is available on the List of Languages.
3. The actual translated word

• You do not have to create a new page that is generated when you add a new translation link. If you do, please see the following section "Templates for new pages" for more information about how to style new pages. The easiest way to create a new page is to put your word in the translation list on the English-language page for that word, then click on the new link you've just created. The site will ask you if you'd like to edit the new page, at which point you can start working on the page.

• Please do not delete any existing translations without first consulting Suzy. You are welcome to add comments about the suitability of a translation in parentheses after it, like so: cords(rarely used term)

• Before creating a new English-language page for a word, please consult with Suzy - MediaWiki's search function is not very good, so it's possible the page you want to create may already exist, under a slightly different form.

"I'm new at this! What should I focus on?"

While there is still a lot of clean-up to do, there are particular types of edits or content additions that are really needed on the wiki!

Here's a list of some helpful tasks that anyone, from a beginner to an expert, can focus on, to get more familiar with this project:

• Adding definitions or synonyms to English-language pages (the Etherington and Roberts dictionary is really great for this)

  Please remember to cite your definitions. Use the available citation templates to do this quickly!

• Adding "Related Terms" for English-language words, to create more inter-wiki links between pages

• Adding citations to translations on English-language pages

  Use the available citation templates to do this quickly!

• Adding notes about the accuracy of certain translations, such as if they're an "archaic" term, or entirely incorrect. If an incorrect term comes from a cited source, please don't delete it, but rather note that it is incorrect on the discussion/talk page for that word.

• Updating the links in the translations sections to the new style, using the three-part translation template.

  For example, changing * English: [[word]] to * English: {{t|en|word}}

Templates for new pages

For creating new pages, you can easily pull in a template by typing {{subst:New}} into the editing window of a new page, then saving it, and re-opening it to continue editing.

References and citing sources

Please cite the source of a translation, description, or image whenever possible!

If an added translation is from your own knowledge as a native speaker, please cite it by adding this code next to the translation:
<ref name="Self">Personal knowledge of ~~~ </ref>

This will parse to: "Personal knowledge of Adminsuzy (talk) 12:38, 27 August 2018 (EDT)", but with your own username.

Please use MLA style whenever possible. For reference, here is how to site a website in MLA style:

Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Version number. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access.

You can include the URL to the site either in front of the citation (and after the opening reference tag), or embed it within the title of the site.

Citation Short Cuts and Citation Templates

There are several frequently-used references, which can be either inserted automatically via a template, or copy-and-pasted from here into the page you are editing. Be sure to change the URL where indicated, or the article title. Please note that in the following examples, the page titles will be italicized, rather than in quotes, once you copy the example exactly and paste it into the body of the page.

Templates have been created for all of these often cited sources - just place the template text after the thing you wish to cite. Please note that some pages may be missing the References section - check that there is this code at the end of the page (but before the category links):
